Mimi needs both socks before sleep. One sock is missing, so Mama helps her look.

Mimi had her bath, and Mama wrapped her in a soft towel.
Mama dried Mimi and put on her clean pajamas.
The room was warm.
Mama put one red sock on Mimi's foot.
Mimi looked at the sock and smiled.

She wiggled that foot and went kick, kick.
Mama reached for the other sock, but it was not there.
Mama looked on the mat and by the pajamas.
"No sock," said Mama.
Mimi looked at her bare toes, and the toes wiggled.

"Where is the sock?" said Mama.
Mimi made a small sound and pointed at the basket.
The basket had clean clothes inside.
"Let's look," said Mama.
Mimi patted the basket and went pat, pat.

Mama pulled out one tiny shirt, and Mimi touched it.
"No sock," said Mama.
Mama pulled out one small hat, and Mimi touched it.
"No sock," said Mama.
Mimi looked at her bare toes again, and her face got quiet.

"Cold toes?" said Mama.
Mama held Mimi's foot in both hands and said, "Warm, warm."
Mimi held Mama's finger and smiled.
Then Mimi looked near the blanket.
A red edge peeked out from under it.

Mimi pointed with one small finger.
"There?" said Mama.
Mimi clapped one time.
Mama lifted the blanket, and the little red sock rolled out.
"Sock found," said Mama.
Mimi reached for it.

Mama put the sock on Mimi's foot.
Toe in, heel in, pull, pull.
Now both feet were warm.
Mimi kicked softly, and the socks stayed on.
Mama lifted Mimi close, and Mimi touched both socks.
"Both socks," said Mama, "and both feet warm."

Mimi leaned on Mama, and her eyes opened and closed.
Mama rocked once, then Mama rocked twice.
"Goodnight, warm toes," said Mama.
Mimi was still, and the red socks stayed together.
Mimi was ready for sleep.
