Three Little Lamplings carry glowing lanterns beneath golden streetlamps while Theo watches from his bedroom window.

Little Lamplings

The little town had pulled a dark, soft blanket of night over its houses. The streets were quiet, the trees were still, and the moon rested above the rooftops like a silver night-light.

Only one tiny lamp was still glowing in one tiny bedroom.

Little Theo lay in bed with his blanket tucked all the way up to his nose. But his eyes were still wide open. He turned to one side, then to the other.

“Daddy?” Theo whispered.

Daddy sat beside the bed, gently stroking his hair. “What is it, my little moonbeam?”

“I am not sleepy at all,” Theo sighed.

Theo lies awake while Daddy gently strokes his hair beside the bed.

Just then, a warm light flashed through the window.

Blink!

Then came another. Blink! And another. Blink!

“What was that?” Theo asked.

“The streetlamps are waking up,” Daddy said.

“But who wakes them?”

Daddy smiled. He wrapped Theo in a warm, fluffy blanket until only his little nose and curious eyes were showing. Then he carried him to the window.

Daddy carries Theo to the window as the first streetlamp begins to glow.

Outside, the night was calm. The houses were sleeping, and the trees stood quietly with their leaves tucked close together.

“Look very carefully,” Daddy whispered. “And be very quiet.”

Theo watched the dark street. Everything was still.

Hush…

Then suddenly—Blink! A streetlamp began to glow with soft, golden light. A moment later—Blink! The next lamp woke up. And then—Blink! A third lamp shone beside it.

“Daddy, did you see that?” Theo whispered.

“I did,” Daddy replied. “Those were the Little Lamplings.”

“The Little Lamplings?”

“Yes. They are the tiniest, softest creatures in the world. They are no bigger than mice. They have furry coats as soft as moss, round little bellies and shiny black eyes.”

Theo pressed his nose closer to the window.

“Each Little Lampling carries a tiny magic lantern,” Daddy continued. “It glows like a little evening star.”

“Where do they live?” Theo asked.

“During the day, they sleep in warm mossy beds beneath the roots of the trees. But when night arrives, they slowly wake up.”

Three Little Lamplings wake in mossy beds beneath the roots of an old tree.

Daddy spoke very softly.

“One Little Lampling rubs its round belly. Two Little Lamplings wiggle their whiskers. Three Little Lamplings pick up their tiny lanterns. Then all three step out into the night.”

Tip-tap, tip-tap, tip-tap…

“Their paws are so soft,” Daddy whispered, “that nobody can hear them.”

The three Little Lamplings tip-tap quietly toward the dark streetlamps.

Theo watched the first dark streetlamp.

“The first Little Lampling walks towards it. It takes three soft steps…”

One… two… three.

“It gives one little stretch…”

Theo stretched his arms beneath the blanket.

“It lifts its tiny lantern and…”

Blink!

The first streetlamp filled the darkness with warm, golden light.

The first Little Lampling stretches up and lights the first streetlamp.

The second Little Lampling walked towards the next lamp.

“Three soft steps…” Daddy whispered.

One… two… three.

“One little stretch…”

Theo stretched again, even more slowly.

“It lifts its tiny lantern and…”

Blink!

The second streetlamp began to shine.

The second Little Lampling makes another streetlamp glow.

Then the third Little Lampling walked towards the last dark lamp.

“Three soft steps…”

One… two… three.

“One little stretch…”

Theo’s stretch turned into a small, sleepy yawn.

“Yaaawn…”

“The Little Lampling lifts its tiny lantern and…”

Blink!

The third streetlamp glowed beside the others. One by one, the lamps filled the street with gentle, golden light.

All three streetlamps glow as Theo gives a sleepy yawn.

“What happens when the Lamplings finish?” Theo asked. His voice was soft and drowsy now.

“When the last lamp is glowing,” Daddy said, “the three Little Lamplings stop beneath the sleepy trees. One Little Lampling puts away its lantern. Two Little Lamplings curl up their tiny tails. Three Little Lamplings yawn together…”

“Yaaawn…” whispered Daddy.

“Yaaawn…” whispered Theo.

The tired Little Lamplings put away their lanterns and yawn beneath the tree.

“Then they tip-tap home beneath the roots of the trees. They wiggle their whiskers, snuggle into their mossy beds and curl themselves into three little furry balls. Then they close their eyes. And they sleep.”

The three Little Lamplings sleep safely in their mossy beds under the roots.

Daddy carried Theo back to bed and gently placed him on his pillow. He tucked the blanket beneath Theo’s chin and kissed his forehead.

“While the Little Lamplings sleep, their lamps watch over everyone,” Daddy whispered.

Daddy tucks Theo into bed and kisses his forehead.

One lamp glowed softly for the sleepy trees. Two lamps glowed warmly for the quiet street. Three lamps whispered, “Good night,” to little Theo.

Theo’s eyelids felt heavy. Very, very heavy.

“The Little Lamplings are sleeping now,” Daddy whispered. “The houses are sleeping. The trees are sleeping. And little Theo can sleep too.”

Theo gave one last, tiny yawn. “Yaaawn…”

He closed his eyes and snuggled deeper into his pillow. In his dreams, he could still hear three pairs of tiny paws beneath the trees.

Tip-tap, tip-tap, tip-tap…

And somewhere in the peaceful night, one last little lantern shone.

Blink.

The world was quiet. The world was warm. The world was safe.

Theo sleeps peacefully while the golden streetlamps watch over the quiet town.

Good night, sleepy trees.

Good night, golden lamps.

Good night, Little Lamplings.

Good night, Theo.

Y no hagas ruido.

Theo observó la calle oscura. Todo estaba inmóvil.

Shhh…

Y entonces—¡Destello! Una tercera farola brilló a su lado.

—Papá, ¿has visto eso?

Buenas noches, farolas doradas.

Buenas noches, pequeños Lamplings.

Buenas noches, Theo.
