The Case of the Grumpy Mountain

The world was grey. The sky was sleepy. The trees were very, very quiet.

But Pip was NOT quiet. Pip was a Spring Scout. Pip was a tiny, fuzzy, neon-yellow dot.

Pip looked at the calendar. “It is Spring!” said Pip. “But where is the green?”

Pip put on his clear-framed glasses. He packed his bag:

A wooden flute (Toot-Toot!)

A red ribbon (Swish-Swish!)

A purple blueberry (Yum-Yum!)

“I will find The Big Green Switch,” said Pip.

Pip hopped to the Silver Pond. Hop. Hop. Hop.

He saw a Fish. The Fish was silver and still. “Fish! Is the Green Switch here?”

The Fish bubbled: Glub… glub… “No, Scout Pip. It is too cold. Ask the Tall Tree.”

Pip climbed the Tall Tree. Climb. Climb. Climb.

He saw an Owl. The Owl was grey and fluffy. “Owl! Is the Green Switch here?”

The Owl hooted: Hoo… hoo… “No, Scout Pip. It is too windy. Ask the Big Mountain.”

Pip reached the Big Mountain. The Mountain was massive. The Mountain was white. It was wearing a thick, snowy blanket.

“THE SWITCH IS HERE!” Pip shouted.

Pip tried his flute. TOOT! TOOT-A-LOOT! The Mountain did not wake up.

Pip tried his ribbon. SWISH! SWISH-A-WISH! He tied it to a rock. The Mountain did not move.

Pip pulled out the blueberry. It was small. It was purple. It was juicy.

Pip climbed to the very top the Mountain’s peak. He placed the blueberry right on the “nose” of the snow. Plink.

The Mountain went… Wiggle. The Mountain went… Sniff. The Mountain went… A-A-A-A-A-A…

CHOOOOOOOOOO!

The snowy blanket flew into the air! The white clouds went POP! The grey rocks went FLOP!

The Mountain was not a mountain. The Mountain was… BARNABY!

Barnaby was a giant, moss-green Sloth. He was as big as a hill and as soft as a rug. Barnaby had been hibernating all winter long.

“Oh!” said Barnaby. “Is it snack time?” Barnaby ate the blueberry. Munch, munch, munch.

Then, Barnaby did a BIG STRETCH. As his giant arms went UP, the green grass pulled UP from the dirt. As his giant toes went OUT, the pink flowers popped OUT of the branches.

Barnaby was the Big Green Switch!

The world was not grey anymore. It was lime green, and bright teal, and sunny pink.

“Good job, Scout Pip,” whispered Barnaby.

The sun was warm. The world was awake.

And now… Pip and Barnaby were very, very… Zzzzzzzzz.

The End
