Lily lived in a cozy house with Mommy, Daddy, her brother Jack and her sister Emma. One night everyone else was asleep, but Lily was still awake.
She turned one way, then the other, hugged her blanket and stared at the dark ceiling.
“My eyes don’t want to close,” Lily whispered.

She looked around her bedroom. Even her toys were resting. Bear sat on the shelf with his paws in his lap. Baby Doll, a little toy with painted sleepy eyes, had her blanket tucked to her chin. Bunny lay beside her with one floppy ear over his eye.

The little piano had played its last tune. Its lid was closed and its stool was tucked underneath.

The remote-control car was switched off and parked beneath the table, with its controller on the shelf.

The door opened just a little and Mommy peeked in. She sat beside Lily and smiled. “I know a quiet secret. Would you like to see what happens around the house while most of the world is sleeping?”

Lily nodded. Mommy wrapped her in a soft blanket, lifted her into her arms and carried her into the hallway.
They passed Jack’s room first. He was curled beneath his blanket, sleeping peacefully after a busy day.

Emma’s room was quiet too. Behind the grown-up bedroom door, Daddy was snoring softly.
Hrrr… hrrr…
Mommy smiled and pressed one finger to her lips. Shhh. Daddy needed his sleep.

At the first window stood the old tree in front of the house. Two squirrels were curled together in a hollow like tiny furry balls. They had chased each other and played all day; now their paws were tired.
“Good night, squirrels,” Lily whispered.

At the dining-room window, Lily saw the garden. “Aha, Mommy! There are my little flowers—the ones I played beside today. Why are they closed?”
“Because they are sleeping,” Mommy explained. “Some flowers fold their petals at night and open them again when the sun returns. The bees are sleeping safely in their hive too.”
“Good night, flowers. Good night, bees.”

At the stair-landing window, a shadow moved on a high branch. An owl blinked in the moonlight and turned her round head.
“Whooo.”
“She’s awake!” Lily said.
“Owls sleep by day,” Mommy explained. “Nighttime is their busy time.”
“Good evening, owl,” Lily whispered.

From the family-room window, they could see orange lights blinking beside the highway. Road workers were repairing the road while there were fewer cars, making it smooth for morning.
“Some people work while we sleep,” Mommy said.
“Good work, road workers,” Lily whispered.

At the front-hall window, the little streetlamp glowed over the empty sidewalk. It stayed awake to help late travellers find their way home.
“Thank you, lamp.”

Lily’s head grew heavy on Mommy’s shoulder as they walked back through the quiet hallway.

Mommy tucked her into bed. “Some are sleeping now, and some are busy. Everyone has their own time. What will you do when the sun comes up?”

Lily did not answer. She was already asleep, holding Bunny’s soft paw with a tiny smile on her face.

Outside, the moon watched over the quiet tree, garden and house.
Good night, squirrels. Good night, flowers and bees. Good evening, owl. Good work, road workers. Thank you, little lamp.
Good night, house. Good night, Lily. Good night.

—Mis ojos no quieren cerrarse —susurró Lily.

—Algunas personas trabajan mientras nosotros dormimos —dijo mamá.

Lily no respondió.

Buenas noches, ardillas. Buenas noches, flores y abejas. Buenas noches, búho. Buen trabajo, trabajadores. Gracias, pequeña farola.
Buenas noches, casa. Buenas noches, Lily. Buenas noches.
